What Is a VPN? A Plain English Guide
You have probably heard the term. You might have been told you need one. But what does a VPN actually do, in terms simple enough to explain to someone who is not into tech? This is that guide.
What Is a VPN?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. At its simplest, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the internet. All your web traffic gets routed through this tunnel before reaching any website or service.
Think of it like this: without a VPN, your internet traffic goes directly from your device to your ISP (Internet Service Provider โ Comcast, AT&T, whoever you pay for internet), then to the website. Your ISP can see everything you do online.
With a VPN, your traffic goes from your device โ to the VPN server (encrypted) โ to the website. Your ISP sees that you sent encrypted data to a VPN server, but cannot see what you were doing. The website sees the VPN server's IP address, not yours.
How Does It Work in Practice?
When you connect to a VPN:
- Your device establishes an encrypted connection to a VPN server run by your VPN provider
- All your internet traffic is routed through that server first
- The website you visit sees the VPN server's IP address, not your real one
- Your ISP sees encrypted traffic going to the VPN server โ nothing more
The encryption means no one between your device and the VPN server โ your ISP, the coffee shop WiFi, your router, government agencies on public networks โ can see what you are doing. The IP address masking means websites cannot trace your activity back to you easily.
Why Would You Use One?
On public WiFi: This is the most common use case. Coffee shop, hotel, airport, a friend's house โ any network you do not control is a risk. Someone on the same network can potentially see your traffic, intercept passwords, or read your emails. A VPN makes that impossible.
Privacy from your ISP: In the US, ISPs can now sell your browsing data. A VPN prevents your ISP from seeing what you do online. They can see you are using a VPN, but not which websites you visit or what you do there.
Hiding your IP address: Every device on the internet has an IP address โ like a phone number that identifies you to every website you visit. A VPN replaces your real IP with the VPN server's IP. This makes it harder to trace your activity across sites.
Accessing content while traveling: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and other services show different content in different countries. Connecting to a VPN server in the UK lets you access UK content from anywhere.
Evading censorship: In countries with internet censorship, VPNs are commonly used to access the unrestricted internet. This is one reason authoritarian governments try to block VPN connections.
What a VPN Does NOT Do
It is important to be clear about what a VPN does not protect you from:
- It does not make you completely anonymous. Websites can still track you through cookies, fingerprints, and account logins. A VPN hides your IP address but not your identity if you log into Facebook or Google.
- It does not protect against viruses or malware. A VPN is not antivirus software. Downloading a malicious file will still infect your computer.
- It does not prevent phishing attacks. Clicking a phishing link will still steal your credentials regardless of VPN status.
- It does not guarantee privacy from the VPN provider itself. The VPN provider can see all your traffic. This is why choosing a trustworthy VPN with a solid no-log policy matters.
How to Choose a VPN
Not all VPNs are equal. Here is what to look for:
- No-log policy: The VPN should not keep records of your activity. Look for independent audits confirming this.
- Based in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction: Countries like Switzerland, Panama, and the British Virgin Islands are outside major intelligence-sharing alliances.
- Strong encryption: Look for AES-256 or ChaCha20 at minimum.
- Fast protocols: WireGuard and OpenVPN are standard. Avoid outdated protocols.
- Kill switch: Ensures your internet is cut if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.
