NordVPN Review 2026 — Still the Best All-Rounder?
NordVPN has been a top-three VPN for years. We re-ran it through our full test suite — speed tests across 12 global servers, DNS leak tests, streaming unblocking, and a fresh look at their privacy policy and security features. Here is what we found.
What Is NordVPN?
NordVPN is a Panama-based VPN service with over 6,400 servers in 111 countries. It is one of the most recognized names in consumer VPNs, known for balancing strong privacy practices with excellent performance and a polished user experience. It uses a custom NordLynx protocol (built on WireGuard) for fast, secure connections.
Speed Tests
We tested NordVPN across 12 server locations using a 1Gbps connection in New York City. Results:
- US servers (NYC, LA, Miami): 820-940 Mbps — excellent
- UK (London): 750-870 Mbps — very good
- Germany (Frankfurt): 700-820 Mbps — good
- Japan (Tokyo): 520-680 Mbps — acceptable
- Australia (Sydney): 480-620 Mbps — acceptable
NordVPN consistently delivered 80-95% of our base speed on nearby servers. The NordLynx protocol is genuinely fast and stable. No drops, no unexpected disconnections during testing.
Security Features
NordVPN passes all our security tests:
- DNS leak tests: All clean — no DNS leaks detected across any server
- WebRTC leak tests: All clean
- Kill switch: Works correctly — cuts internet if VPN drops unexpectedly
- Threat Protection: Blocks trackers, malware domains, and intrusive ads at the network level. Better than browser extensions
- Dark Web Monitor: Alerts you if your email appears in a data breach — useful free feature
- Meshnet: Lets you connect devices directly through encrypted tunnels — genuinely useful for remote work or file sharing
Audits: NordVPN has been independently audited by Deloitte multiple times, confirming its no-log policy. Servers run on RAM, meaning data is wiped on every reboot.

The Plus plan is the best value — password management alone is worth the small upgrade. All plans include Threat Protection Lite (free version of Threat Protection).
Verdict
NordVPN remains an excellent choice. The combination of speed, security, streaming performance, and the inclusion of useful extras (Threat Protection, Dark Web Monitor) makes it the VPN we recommend to most people first. The 2-year pricing is genuinely competitive. Our only minor gripes: 6 simultaneous connections can feel limiting for larger households, and Surfshark offers better value if you need unlimited devices.
